Black Hawks Top Leafs in Toronto, Stretch Unbeaten Streak to Nine

Dec. 26, 1964 - Bobby Hull scored his 29th goal of the season, and the Chicago Black Hawks stretched their undefeated string to nine games tonight with a 5-3 victory over Toronto at Maple Leaf Gardens. (Pictured below, Toronto’s Eddie Shack wreaks havoc in the Black Hawks’ goal mouth as Chicago’s Al MacNeil and netminder Denis Dejordy fend him off.)

The Black Hawks, who took undisputed possession of second place with the victory, remained four points back of Montreal. Chicago has not lost since Dec. 6.

Power play goals by Bill Hay and Phil Esposito keyed the Hawks’ triumph. Hay’s goal in the first period came after the Leafs, playing with two men in the penalty box, held Chicago off for 1 minute, 14 seconds. Then, with Toronto only one man down, Hay scored.

The game was a rough one. Referee Frank Udvari called 18 minor penalties, nine on each team.

Ron Ellis of Toronto was carried off on a stretcher after being thumped by the Hawks’ Al MacNeil in the first period, and Toronto goalie Johnny Bower was hit in the head with a deflected puck late in the second. Ellis was able to return to the ice later in the game.

The Hawks return home to play Boston tomorrow night and then head east to meet New York on Tuesday and Detroit on Thursday.
