Bills’ Cookie Gilchrist Breaks AFL Rushing Record

Dec. 8, 1962 - Fullback Cookie Gilchrist became the first American Football League rusher to gain more than 1,000 yards in a season today and scored all the Buffalo Bills’ points in a 20-3 victory over the New York Titans. The 243-pound Gilchrist kicked field goals of 42 and 27 yards in the first half and then scored on touchdown runs of 42 and 30 yards in each of the final 2 periods to help the Bills wind up their first winning season in the AFL. Buffalo’s final record is 7-6-1. Gilchrist gained only 26 yards in the first half, but he broke loose for 117 yards during the second half to increase his league-leading rushing haul to 1,096.
