May 30, 1964 - Hitting No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 today is “Love Me Do,” a single by the Beatles. It was the British group’s debut single in the U.K., where it was released on Oct. 5, 1962, and it peaked at No. 17 on the U.K. charts.
The song was written several years before being recorded, prior to the existence of the Beatles. Written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, it features Lennon’s prominent harmonica playing and duet vocals by him and McCartney.
The first attempted recording from June 1962 featured Pete Best on drums. A second version was recorded three months later with Best’s replacement Ringo Starr, and this was used for the original Parlophone single first pressing.
