Beatles Take a Peek at Florida Keys

Sept. 11, 1964 - The Beatles, while pretending to be cooped up in a luxury motel cottage, have actually been sneaking out to get a look at the Florida Keys, their press secretary said today.

Press Secretary Derek Taylor, who for a time was forced to shut off his phone — even to the press — said all but Ringo Starr have managed to get past the legions of teenagers who have surrounded their cottage.

“Except for Ringo, they’ve all gone out in cars at one time or another,” Taylor said.

The Beatles were diverted to Key West from Toronto Wednesday, when Hurricane Dora prevented a landing in Jacksonville, where they were headed for a concert.

The Beatles wanted to go to Nassau but settled for a two days’ rest in the Keys before heading back to Jacksonville.

“John [Lennon] went shopping in Key West Thursday and then drove up to Key Largo that night,” Taylor said.

Taylor said George Harrison and Paul McCartney went to the Sugarloaf Key residence of a friend.

Taylor didn’t give a reason why Ringo didn’t join the others in looking around the Keys.

The Beatles’ American tour manager, Ira Sidelle, said earlier that the singers had been “held prisoners” in the motel by hordes of bubble-gum chewers.
