Sept. 2, 1964 - Moe Septee and Felix Gerstman, promoters of tonight’s Beatle concert at Philadelphia’s Convention Hall, introduced the four mop-topped musicians at a press conference at the Hall at 5 p.m.
Highlights of that cultural exchange of quips were:
Q — Pittsburgh’s hotels fearing for damage by your fans have announced they won’t accommodate you when you visit for a Sept. 14 concert. Where do you think you’ll stay?
John Lennon — I didn’t know we were going to Pittsburgh, but I’m sure we’ll find some humble abode.
Q — George, what’s your side of the story of why you threw a drink at a photographer in a bar out on the Coast?
George Harrison — We went out to a private party, and the manager of the Whiskey A-Go-Go asked us to his place, guaranteeing it would be private. Then this nasty little photographer — a real uncouth youth — kept popping flashbulbs at us. So I blessed him.
Q — Paul, do you find any difference in teenagers of different countries you visit?
Paul McCartney — Only in their accents.
Q — What do you think of serious music?
John Lennon — It’s rock ’n’ roll. Of course, all music is serious, depending on who’s listening to it.
Q — What do you think of Elvis Presley?
Ringo Starr — Some of his earlier stuff is good. Don’t care for what he’s been doing recently.
Q — What have you heard about Philadelphia?
Lennon — Riots.
Q — Where would you be with crewcuts?
Lennon — I don’t think it would make any difference. Our sound was the original thing. The funny part came later.
Q — What do you do cooped up in your hotel rooms?
McCartney — Monopoly is the latest game.
