Beatles Help Ed Sullivan Double Ratings

Feb. 10, 1964 - Ed Sullivan’s television show doubled its usual rating in the New York area last night when it presented the Beatles, the rock ’n’ roll group from Britain. The increase showed up in surveys made by the A.C. Nielsen Company and the American Research Bureau. Nielsen said that the rating was 58.8, meaning the percentage of television homes that were tuned in to the Sullivan show. The company said that this was the highest rating for an entertainment program in the New York area since it established its instantaneous rating service in 1959.
