Beatles are Welcomed Home

Sept. 22, 1964 - The Beatles are home, and their triumphant tour of America ended in a passionate welcome from their British fans last night.

Screaming and singing, 8,000 youngsters swept forward as Paul, Ringo, John, and George stepped down from their jet at London Airport.

Desperate police fought to save frenzied girls from hurling themselves off the observation platforms as the smiling pop idols waved from the gangway.

Then, within minutes, the mop-topped lads were rushed to their waiting car.

For the fans, who started gathering at the airport nine hours before the arrival time, it had been a hard day’s wait.

They swarmed over the airport building, chanting: “We love you, Beatles!” and “Ringo for President!”

The Beatles had survived equally ecstatic scenes as they left New York’s Kennedy Airport at the end of their 30-day tour, which has earned them well over a million dollars.

A reporter asked Ringo what he would do first upon arriving in London.

He replied: “Get off the plane.”
