Sept. 9, 1964 - The Ford Motor Company announced today a line of full-sized Fords that is completely new from the body shell out, and the addition of a “fastback” model to the Mustang line. Changes for 1965 are minor in the compact Ford Falcon, the intermediate Ford Fairlane, and the high-priced Thunderbird.
The new Mustang model, the 2 + 2, is similar to the present model except for a “fastback” roof line, which sweeps in an unbroken line toward the rear bumper. There is a trend toward this styling in the industry.
The side of the fastback roof will contain louvers, which will permit the car to be ventilated with the windows closed. The car door will be narrower, and the rear side window eliminated, to accommodate this. The rear seat will fold down to provide added hauling space.
