Sept. 15, 1964 - The Cadillac Division of the General Motors Corporation announced today the line of 1965 models. The car’s distinctive tail fins have been eliminated, but its basic styling approach is the same.
Harold Warner, Cadillac’s general manager, showed the new cars at the division’s annual press preview in Detroit. Most of the 1965 models will grow in length, and one Fleetwood model will be a separate size.
The 1965 Cadillacs will discontinue the tail fins that have been a trademark of the car since 1948. The tail fins reached their height in the 1957 and 1958 model years, but since then have gradually diminished in size. While the fins are gone, the rear fenders still rise slightly above the trunk lid as do those in many other cars.
The new Cadillacs will have completely new body shells, and the first new chassis in nine years. The cars will shift from horizontally mounted dual headlights to vertically mounted lights.
The new chassis will result from the adoption of a perimeter frame, shaped like a rectangle beneath the body, to replace the “X” frame used by Cadillac since 1957.
This change was made to permit a lowering of the floor and drive line tunnel, which the division said would provide about two inches additional interior space.
The 1965 Cadillacs will be boxier in appearance but will still be designed in the familiar Cadillac tradition and will not adopt the raised rear fenders or long, sloping roofs that many G.M. cars will have in 1965.
Cadillac will continue to offer 11 models in three series, but the higher-priced Fleetwood Sixty special sedan will be given a size distinctive from less costly cars. The 62 series will be renamed the Calais.
