Austria Observes 25th Anniversary of Anschluss

Mar. 11, 1963 - Austria observed today the 25th anniversary of the day — March 11, 1938 — it disappeared from the European map a quarter century ago and became part of Hitler’s “Greater Germany.” Chancellor Aflons Gorbach said the world failed to act on the Austrian cries for help, and the country became the first victim of Nazi aggression. Mr. Gorbach spoke to several thousand Viennese at Heroes’ Square in downtown Vienna. The man who spent five years in Nazi concentration camps said he was speaking “without bitterness, for the sake of historical truth.” (Pictured below, a crowd in Austria cheers the German annexation in 1938.)
