Apr. 13, 1965 - All seven games that the New York Jets of the American Football League will play away from home next fall will be televised in New York in color over Channel 4, WNBC-TV. It will be the first time that professional football has been presented in color on a regular basis.
The seven away games of the New York Giants of the National Football League will be televised in black-and-white over Channel 2, WCBS-TV.
William MacPhail, vice president of sports for CBS, said CBS had no plans to present football in color before the fall of 1966.
Rights to the AFL games are held by NBC, the chief proponent of color among the networks. It will televise its first Jets game Sept. 12, when New York plays the Houston Oilers in Houston’s new domed stadium. One of NBC’s color cameras will be suspended in a gondola just below the dome.
On Sept. 11, NBC will televise a football game to be played by the University of Houston and the University of Tulsa in the Houston stadium.
