Ali Speaks Out on Liston’s Legal Troubles

Dec. 26, 1964 - The heavyweight boxing champion, Muhammad Ali, said today in Kentucky that it was “pitiful” that the former champion, Sonny Liston (pictured following his arrest), had to spend Christmas night in jail.

Liston was arrested in Denver on a charge of drunken driving and, because courts were closed over Christmas, could not be released.

“I think maybe it was blown up out of proportion on him,” Ali said, “to make it look like a real big thing because of who he is. It happens to me all the time. I hope Liston can stay out of trouble so I can make him a lot of money by fighting him again.”
Ali, whose title defense against Liston was canceled last month when Ali had an emergency operation for a hernia, said he would start work for his rematch with Liston, planned for next spring, in about four weeks.
