Nov. 4, 1964 - American Football League owners voted today against expanding before the 1966 season.
Commissioner Joe Foss (left with Gino Cappelletti), in announcing the decision, said the owners had decided to concentrate on strengthening the eight teams in the league.
“When the AFL was founded, its goal was parity with the long-established National Football League,” Foss said. “Because we’ve had only eight teams to start, as opposed to 14 in the NFL, parity has been more quickly approached and now, with the increase in the player limit, we will be the stronger league by 1966. Then we’ll again consider the question of expansion.”
Foss said inquiries had been received from 28 groups or individuals in 10 cities regarding expansion.
