AFL Commissioner Fines Two Players

Oct. 30, 1964 - American Football League commissioner Joe Foss was in a fine mood today. He made 320-pound San Diego Charger tackle Ernie Ladd (pictured) $500 lighter for attacking an opponent, Ed Hussmann, and fined Houston Oiler quarterback George Blanda $250 for criticizing AFL officiating. The six-foot-nine Ladd was ejected from the game in the last minute of the first half after ripping a helmet from Hussmann and pounding him on the head with it last Sunday, and Blanda had become incensed in the same game when his tying field-goal attempt was ruled wide.

The fines were the first meted out by Foss in his three-year administration. He termed the actions of Ladd and Blanda “detrimental to the best interests of the AFL.”

Ladd, who dwarfs the six-foot-two, 238-pound Hussmann, thinks “the fine is too heavy. I try to avoid fights.”
