Abe Pollin and Partners Purchase NBA’s Bullets

Nov. 23, 1964 - It was unanimous. Everyone was delighted: Abe Pollin, Earl Foreman, and Arnold Heft with their acquiring Baltimore’s NBA franchise, the Bullets; and commissioner Walter Kennedy for the excitement the record $1.1 million transaction created for his league.

“This is a significant day in the NBA,” Kennedy told today’s press gathering at the Civic Center after the three Maryland businessmen turned their check over to Dave Trager, whose Chicago Attractions, Inc., took the original gamble in moving to Baltimore. “Such a deal adds another chapter to our exciting year.

“I would like to extend to Dave Trager, the sparkplug and fireball of the old syndicate, best wishes. It was a wonderful privilege to work with Chicago Attractions. And I welcome the new owners into the fold.”
Pollin, a 41-year-old contractor, is president in the new venture which received league sanction unanimously last Thursday in New York. Foreman, who grew up in East Baltimore and now is also part owner of the Philadelphia Eagles, will be vice president and ex-referee Heft secretary-treasurer.

“This fulfills a lifelong ambition,” Pollin declared. “You know, if I don’t like people, I don’t do business with them, but it was a pleasure to deal with Mr. Trager. Now, we’re going to try to make the playoffs.”
