10-Year-Old JFK Asked for a Raise

Nov. 26, 1964 - When he was 10 years old, John F. Kennedy (left in 1927 with siblings Joe Jr. and Kathleen) wrote his parents a letter and asked that his allowance be raised.

The late President’s mother, Rose, 73, recalled it for newsmen today and said it probably was her favorite item in the Kennedy Memorial Library Exhibit.

“He felt that since he was a Boy Scout, he should have more money,” Mrs. Kennedy said just before leaving Kennedy Airport for Paris.

The exhibit, which includes his rocking chair, letters, and historic documents, opens there on Nov. 28. Mrs. Kennedy also will accompany it to Brussels, Copenhagen, and Bonn.

Being close to the mementos will be painful, she said, but she felt it necessary for some member of the family to be present.

She speaks some French and German and will do so during the showing, Mrs. Kennedy said.

She carried with her about 50 Kennedy half dollars, which she will give to youngsters overseas.

Reporters asked her if she ever had thought about the danger of being President when her son ran for office.

“No, I never thought of the danger,” Mrs. Kennedy replied. “No one ever considered the danger, especially in our country.”

Before boarding the plane, she telephoned her husband, Joseph P. Kennedy, in Palm Beach. She said she would join him there after returning from abroad.
