July 27, 1963 - A 10-year-old boy, Torin Thompkin, delivered a baby half brother today in Long Beach, California. The police said Mrs. Betty Nicoll, 30, was at home with her 6 children, aged 18 months to 11 years, when she began experiencing labor pains. She sent her 11-year-old son, Kelly, out for help. While Kelly was gone, the police said, the baby started to arrive, and Mrs. Nicoll asked young Torin for assistance. By the time the police arrived, the boy had learned the fundamentals of obstetrics by experience. Mrs. Nicoll gave instructions as the rest of the children looked on. “The little boy performed the complete delivery,” a policeman reported. “He’s a mighty exceptional lad.” Torin and Kelly are children of a previous marriage. The other five are by her estranged husband, James Nicoll. Mrs. Nicoll, the baby, and Torin were all reported in good condition.
